The Best of Bingham: Congratulations, Christi Anderson!

By • Nov 30th, 2011 • Department: Labor and Employment

It’s award season, people, and we aren’t talking about the Oscars! Each winter, the legal community recognizes local judges, attorneys, and firms for their contributions to the community and to the profession.

Christi Anderson Receives IBA 2011 Pro Bono Award

This year, we congratulate our Women’s Forum Co-Chair Christi Anderson on her receipt of the Indianapolis Bar Association’s Pro Bono Award recognizing an attorney aiding entities. The award recognizes Christi’s service to the Cancer Support Community and the St. Francis Cancer Center where she regularly gives presentations to cancer patients and their caregivers about estate planning and end-of-life decisions. Christi also worked with St. Francis over the past year to develop and present their National Health Care Day of Decision – a national initiative held on April 16th of each year to educate people about advance directives and encourage them to prepare and sign one. Christi also initiated the IBA hospice program at St. Francis. The program provides free legal advice to indigent and low income hospice patients. Finally, Christi has served on the IBA pro bono standing committee for 5 years and does a significant amount of pro bono work for individuals as well.

Christi is a role model for all of us – she identifies needs in the community and then uses her legal skills and connections to meet them. Congratulations, Christi!

A Reputation for Excellent Pro Bono Service

Last year, Bingham McHale was recognized by the IBA as the Pro Bono Firm of the Year and partner Phil Fowler was named the Pro Bono Attorney of the Year. Phil, assisted by Ken Munson and Women’s Forum members Meg Christensen and Bri (Kovac) Clark, represented the plaintiffs pro bono in Hendrickson v. Sgt. S. Cooper and Taylor v. Officer Stewart. In both cases, the Court commended the firm and for its excellent representation. Learn more here.

As a firm, we are committed to providing legal services to the underprivileged and meeting otherwise un-met needs. All of our attorneys are encouraged to commit a portion of their time to pro bono service for the benefit of the community and the profession.

Anne Cowgur, Jackie Ponder and Kevin McGoff Win Awards

We are also proud to recognize Women’s Forum members Anne Cowgur and Jackie Ponder for their work on the first ever Women and the Law Division Symposium. The Symposium garnered the Indianapolis Bar Association’s Women and the Law Division the IBA’s Dr. John Morton Finney Award for Excellence in Legal Education.

Kevin McGoff has also been recognized for his leadership of the Communications Work Group and involvement in numerous other IBA committees and educational programs.  He has been awarded the 2011 Board of Directors Award.

2011 IBA award recipients were honored at the IBA’s annual recognition luncheon on November 29th.

The Best of Bingham is a series of posts by the Bingham McHale Women’s Forum recognizing the professional and community successes of our members, our colleagues, and our clients.
